GLOWING SHEEP

I approached this very small painting quite casually, except when it came to the sheep. I felt impulsed to make the sheep appear to be glowing. Sheep are very popular and I think they make people feel secure and happy. When I was young quite a lot of people thought that sheep were stupid. Now, of course, I know that no creature is stupid, far from it, and sheep are no exception. They remain, at least in the Midlands of England, a symbol of prosperity, and the ram is the clan animal chiefly associated with the ancient Celtic peoples who once populated Derbyshire, my birthplace. There is also, of course, the Christian significance of the lamb and it is said that sheep were witness to the birth of the Christ(ed) Child. In this work the sheep represents the peace and security of the land that is lived upon with care, and in balance. If only this were so!
